Innovation Competition IdeaDrill

Written by Joonas Villanen on Wednesday, 30 October 2013.

The big final

The past few days have been crazy! We just finished a major event which we have been planning, executing, and producing for 6 months now. Although, after all that hard work I have to say that nothing - I mean absolutely nothing - feels as good as having a successful event with loads of positive feedback! SO SO REWARDING!!

So… what am I talking about? I am talking about an innovation competition for students, IdeaDrill. The goal was to create a marketing campaign for the sea and metal industry focusing on the local companies who operate in that field!

This was part of a bigger EU-project called Kaleidoskooppi-venture. Though, IdeaDrill in its own right, has been in multiple magazines, on the radio, on web portals and on youtube - of course. But without blabbering away, check the video below and enjoy the vibe of the competition!!

Would you participate in a competition like this? Did you participate? Share thy thoughts below!!

Resume-Envy: This Resume Makes Yours Look Pretty Lame

Resume-Envy: This Resume Makes Yours Look Pretty Lame

Today, I was browsing the vast social media field and came across something pretty awesome. A New York based multidisciplinary designer left a lot of his fellow job seekers in the dust by making his interactive, animated, and graphically fun CV. See the full version HERE!

In short, I think this is what it's all about! Having fun, putting your own skills to the test by challenging the norm. I LOVE IT! He made sure he will have NO problems getting job offers because he made himself valuable. He's shown what he can do instead of making you guess! The resume tells and, more importantly, shows the whole story of his capabilities - Well done, sir.

A little while back, I was asked to speak about video-CVs - Why make one? The answers are pretty similar to what I would say about this online resume: Video-CVs show personality. As an employer, you can see which prospects put the time, care, and effort into their resume. It shows their willingness to work and dedicate time to stand out from the standard. They've taken the initiative to create a little something special for a function that is so mind-numbingly normal.

These are some of the things that WILL separate you from the competition. Now, let's be bold!

What do you think about this guy's idea? Have you seen other great examples somewhere? Care to share?

Please, share thy thoughts below!!

The Day for Failure!

Written by Joonas Villanen on Sunday, 13 October 2013.

What is your biggest failure?

So, it is national "Day for Failure" here in Finland. To start, what a great reason to have a celebration! I don't know how others feel about this, but I feel like failure is under-rated and over feared. We shouldn't give so much power to the negative side of failure! Ultimately, it is the fear of failure, or humiliation, that stops us from doing things.

Today is a great day to go ahead and do the things you have feared so much. Because today, if something should go wrong, you are a hero! Heroes are celebrated and they are looked up to!

I thought to share one of my own failures from the past. It was an interview I was ordered to shoot. It all started with numerous emails going back and forth in hopes of finding a suitable time to shoot the interview. We managed to find a time that suited everyone.
Great, I thought to myself. The day came and we were all set. Video, check! Guest, check! Sound… no check. We shot the interview and it turned out beautifully. Only in the editing phase did I notice that there was no sound. I was like, whaaaat? In a small panic, I was retracing the whole situation. As a last resort to find out what happened, I went back to the camera to check out the settings - they were wrong… So, there was I with an interview of silence.

I took a minute to digest the whole thing and then made a humble phone call in which I admitted to my mistake and hoped for a second chance.

Gladly, the client took it well and we all had a good laugh about the whole situation. This incident was a little less serious than some failures can be, but it was embarrassing, nonetheless.

My advice for all of you is: Don't take yourself too seriously. Only then you can truly look at your failures as an opportunity to learn and to grow!

So, today I challenge you to go and do something bold - and risk failure, won't ya?
Have fun failing!!!

We would love to hear your stories of failures you have had in the past. Share those stories below!!

Learn to embrace Google's Hummingbird in your business

Written by Joonas Villanen on Thursday, 10 October 2013.

How Google's update should change your content?

The search engine giant has been a part of - well, lets face it - everyone's life for years now. The giant, Google, just launched its biggest update since 2001. The Google Hummingbird aims to mix up the searches towards better, more fulfilling and higher quality results.

What does it mean for us marketers and business owners?

Well, the new update works in two ways: Instead of keyword searches, the engine is now utilizing more of a conversational search. This helps searchers to find what they're looking for in a more natural manner. In practice, this means that people can now search with longer, more conversational sentences like, "what is a good restaurant in the city of __________?". Secondly, the searchers can now see content right on the search page. This helps people to navigate more accurately, as well as, efficiently.

When you consider your SEO ranking and / or your SEO strategy, consider this:
"Content for the sake of 'words on a page' doesn't have the base value it once had. Now, your content really has to answer something. This should move content strategy higher on the list of business marketing objectives; it's now even more important for desktop and mobile SEO." Sebald from Google said.

This is a major element when considering how we rank ourselves, my fellow SMEs. This will change everything. The only thing to say at this point is make your content count. Create more of it. Answer more questions with it. Consider what your customers might ask and then write about it. Make it meaningful and make lots of it.

Content is the key if you want your business to rank!

What are your thoughts on this?? How are you going to change your strategy? Share thy thoughts below!!

What Does a Billion Dollars Look Like?

on Tuesday, 01 October 2013.

Check the Video Below for the Answer

What Does a Billion Dollars Look Like?

Start ups are HOT - I get it. This trendy topic is filling the social media with articles of how this CEO made millions and how that company collected a hundred million in investments. Headers of success stories are everywhere.

I read them because I am curious of what is being made and developed, what products are making it big, and what kind of people are behind the success. Everyone starts somewhere and many of the starting entrepreneurs are not millionaires. They are hundred-aires or thousand-aires at best. But no matter our current situations, we all have something in common: We all imagine having a great fortune some day - for some, that fortune is monetary.

So, here is my question to you: Have you ever visualized what a billion dollars or euros might look like? I haven't, and to be honest, after seeing this video, I was blown away. It was surreal to look at what a billion dollars might look like!!

Have you seen anything like this before? Have you thought what a billion dollars might look like? Share thy thoughts below!!

50 Most Innovative Companies in the World

Written by Joonas Villanen on Sunday, 29 September 2013.

Technology, Consumer and Retail, and Automotive Companies ruled the chart

As we live in a world that embraces the technology in almost all aspects of life, and because technology is almost always considered when talking about innovation, it is good to measure who is the most innovative, right?

Since 2005, The Boston Consulting Group has surveyed 1500 executives every year from different fields to get an answer to the question: "mirror mirror, who is the most innovative of them all?". The executives rate companies from their own field. The final answer also takes into consideration the last three-year shareholder growth, revenue growth, and margin growth. This allows subjective measurement of the companies.

This got me thinking.. What is the real use of this chart? All it shows is the giants just going up and down the list year after year. What does it mean for the rest of us?

Well, in my opinion, it just indicates which companies had a good year. I want to know more and so I thought to share some of the questions to consider when looking into the intriguing details behind the results.

Questions that came to my head:

1. What did the companies do differently this year than last year?
2. Was a risky move taken, i.e. launching new products, campaigns etc.?
2.1 Did it pay off or was it a bust?
3. Where did they invest capital?
3.1 New markets, new technology, training?
4. Was there a peak in demand in a particular field causing a good year?
5. Were any new key players employed? Leadership changes?
6. Who was it and what did they do?

What are your thoughts? Any surprises? Can this chart help us make a difference in our business? Share thy thoughts below!

Why brands need to be in YouTube

Written by Joonas Villanen on Thursday, 19 September 2013.

Invest in where your customers are!

Why brands need to be in YouTube

Very often, while browsing the internet, I have to consciously stop myself from spiraling into an hours-long video watching frenzy! We have all been there, am I right? So if we all do it, then shouldn't brands and advertisers be there as well? I say YES, they should most definitely be there! I'm not talking about ads; I'm talking about videos that speak to their customers, showcase their products and tell a story.

Just a few fun facts: YouTube reaches more than any cable or TV service company in the world by having over 1 billion unique visitors daily. YouTube is the second most used search engine in the world. Videos can increase Social media interaction by 800%. Old spice brand saw 107% increase in sales within 2 days from a successful video marketing.

There is only one conclusion to be made; people are not just watching videos, they are seeking them out. They are seeking information through videos. So why in the world aren't the brands engaging with their customers through video? YouTube is surely cheaper than a 30 second commercial on TV. And don't even get me started with the estimated viewer stats which are fed to the consumer by the station. They are estimations which cannot be measured. At least in YouTube we can measure data about who watched the video, when, and where, ourselves.

So, my argument is that video is a must-have selling tool! What do you think? Leave thy comments BELOW!!
