I love to travel. A lot of the destinations my wife and I choose require a flight. Sometimes it’s short and sometimes we spend an excruciating 9 consecutive hours in a plane. There is one thing that is always the same, though, no matter what airline you take - You must sit through a required-by-law safety presentation.

That is, until now!!

Virgin Atlantic finally broke the mould when they turned a routine that’s so boring and dull into a video that is entertaining, attention grabbing, and informative.

This is yet another great example of how video can be used to boost your marketing and sales as this video has gone viral. It’s yet another testament to how creative we can get with a video, even when the topic is as boring as showing how to buckle / unbuckle your seatbelt in an airplane.

Innovation Competition IdeaDrill

IdeaDrill

The past few days have been crazy! We just finished a major event which we have been planning, executing, and producing for 6 months now. Although, after all that hard work I have to say that nothing - I mean absolutely nothing - feels as good as having a successful event with loads of positive feedback! SO SO REWARDING!!

So… what am I talking about? I am talking about an innovation competition for students, IdeaDrill. The goal was to create a marketing campaign for the sea and metal industry focusing on the local companies who operate in that field!

This was part of a bigger EU-project called Kaleidoskooppi-venture. Though, IdeaDrill in its own right, has been in multiple magazines, on the radio, on web portals and on youtube - of course. But without blabbering away, check the video below and enjoy the vibe of the competition!!

The Day for Failure!

So, it is national "Day for Failure" here in Finland. To start, what a great reason to have a celebration! I don't know how others feel about this, but I feel like failure is under-rated and over feared. We shouldn't give so much power to the negative side of failure! Ultimately, it is the fear of failure, or humiliation, that stops us from doing things.

Today is a great day to go ahead and do the things you have feared so much. Because today, if something should go wrong, you are a hero! Heroes are celebrated and they are looked up to!

I thought to share one of my own failures from the past. It was an interview I was ordered to shoot. It all started with numerous emails going back and forth in hopes of finding a suitable time to shoot the interview. We managed to find a time that suited everyone.
Great, I thought to myself. The day came and we were all set. Video, check! Guest, check! Sound… no check. We shot the interview and it turned out beautifully. Only in the editing phase did I notice that there was no sound. I was like, whaaaat? In a small panic, I was retracing the whole situation. As a last resort to find out what happened, I went back to the camera to check out the settings - they were wrong… So, there was I with an interview of silence.

I took a minute to digest the whole thing and then made a humble phone call in which I admitted to my mistake and hoped for a second chance.

Gladly, the client took it well and we all had a good laugh about the whole situation. This incident was a little less serious than some failures can be, but it was embarrassing, nonetheless.

My advice for all of you is: Don't take yourself too seriously. Only then you can truly look at your failures as an opportunity to learn and to grow!

So, today I challenge you to go and do something bold - and risk failure, won't ya?

What Does a Billion Dollars Look Like?

Start ups are HOT - I get it. This trendy topic is filling the social media with articles of how this CEO made millions and how that company collected a hundred million in investments. Headers of success stories are everywhere.

I read them because I am curious of what is being made and developed, what products are making it big, and what kind of people are behind the success. Everyone starts somewhere and many of the starting entrepreneurs are not millionaires. They are hundred-aires or thousand-aires at best. But no matter our current situations, we all have something in common: We all imagine having a great fortune some day - for some, that fortune is monetary.

So, here is my question to you: Have you ever visualized what a billion dollars or euros might look like? I haven't, and to be honest, after seeing this video, I was blown away. It was surreal to look at what a billion dollars might look like!!

Technology, Consumer and Retail, and Automotive Companies ruled the chart

As we live in a world that embraces the technology in almost all aspects of life, and because technology is almost always considered when talking about innovation, it is good to measure who is the most innovative, right?

Since 2005, The Boston Consulting Group has surveyed 1500 executives every year from different fields to get an answer to the question: "mirror mirror, who is the most innovative of them all?". The executives rate companies from their own field. The final answer also takes into consideration the last three-year shareholder growth, revenue growth, and margin growth. This allows subjective measurement of the companies.

This got me thinking.. What is the real use of this chart? All it shows is the giants just going up and down the list year after year. What does it mean for the rest of us?

Well, in my opinion, it just indicates which companies had a good year. I want to know more and so I thought to share some of the questions to consider when looking into the intriguing details behind the results.

Questions that came to my head:

1. What did the companies do differently this year than last year?
2. Was a risky move taken, i.e. launching new products, campaigns etc.?
   2.1 Did it pay off or was it a bust?
3. Where did they invest capital?
   3.1 New markets, new technology, training?
4. Was there a peak in demand in a particular field causing a good year?
5. Were any new key players employed? Leadership changes?
6. Who was it and what did they do?
